In 1989 Sega released a console called the "Genesis" in North America, following it's counterpart in Japan the "Master System" . It came out to compete with the already successful Nintendo Entertainment System console. and it actually did really good, at least in North America.
By acquiring the rights to release games based on Disney Motion Pictures, Sega Developed many amazing games such as "Lion King", "World of illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse", "Quack Shot", and many others. But the one that made a bigger impression and even today is consider one of the top Genesis games of all time.
Aladdin Is a beautiful game and very fun platformer.
The Graphics, as in many of these Disney titles, are astonishing for the time, the colours and animations are excellent. The Backgrounds are very accurate and polished, representing all the different moments of the movie.
The sound is nothing new really, just what you would expect from most of 16bit games from the era. But the Music on the other hand, just like in the Movie, has these melodies that are memorable and very hard to forget.
Gameplay-wise the game works perfectly, which was very nice to see accompanied by the the art and music that were also very well made. Jumps feel nice and the movement animations look nice and soft while running. The different ways of attacking with the Sword and the apples you can throw as well as the different characters you get to play with like the monkey "Abbu" give the game variety.
The New Feature I would add to Aladdin is a little more levels to certain scenes of the movie that are missed. A 3rd weapon would be nice too.
Altered Beast is currently among the top 10 Genesis games of all times on many media sources. It approaches the shape snifter genre and does it right. Combined with the Greek mythology delivers a very particular and original experience. It is a particularity short game but also a really solid experience overall, that I personally would replay many times. Even though is a simple "move and smash them all" game, the background story makes it something I could play today and enjoy as much as a current title.
Graphically is as you would expect from a game from the 90', no more, no less. the Humanoid beast forms the main character takes are very well drawn and animation of the shape shifting look awesome by also being simple and not to over the top. the design of the beast is also notable. The visual effects are also worth mentioning, since they are not always present on this kind of games. The art in the box is amazing too.
The sounds are again nothing from the other world but accurate enough in order not to get you out of the experience. The Music as all games during this time that had the limitation of 3 tones, but still delivered a soundtrack that made sense with the general setting of the game, like the organ tune that is something I haven't heard in any other 16bit game.
The Gamplay is overall very fluent, basic at times, by only having horizontal movement and not z-axis movement like other titles on the system. But combined with the animations and cut scenes changing the perspective of the character when he becomes beast for example.
To this game I would like to be a longer experience, I really enjoyed the story and I think it had more room to get more interesting situations going on.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is considered by many the very best Sega Genesis of all time. I feel it deserves the title for sure. it was Sega response against Nintendo's successful Italian plummer. And even it the idea of a Fast Blue hedgehog wearing red shoes sounded silly, it ended Up being as iconic as it's Nintendo counterpart and for many of us even leaving a bigger mark on our earlier gaming days.
Game Graphics are great in terms of how special they are, just by seeing the scenery you can figure out what game you are looking at. It also bring 3D elements on certain special levels showing a 3D half pipe in which the player collect rings. The saturated colours and level design all contribute to the unique experience this game gives the player.
Sounds and Music again are made out of very little amount of tunes but still manages to bring to the table melodies that stick on our minds and only by listening we know is the Hedgehog who is on the screen. The sound effects work with the cartoony theme and the atmosphere.
Gameplay is fast but feels great, as well as depressing when you are hit and loose rings you have collected, Levels sometimes get difficult to keep track of which way you have to go. The game gives you the option of playing as Sonic, Tails or both, which delivers a more spiced game by giving you the chance of choosing at least in a little way how you want to beat it. Also having a Multiplayer mode in which you can challenge other players on races.
The game is Ling enough and the differences between the levels are very much appreciated.
To Sonic I would make the levels less confusing, without making too straight line but at least giving it a better understanding of the whole space you are currently in. The speed doesn't help on this either so to have a way to make the character slow down quicker and not slide too much would be great.
